Kaise Banega Karorpati? (How to become a billionaire?) – Empathetic Ecosystem for Grassroots Innovations

  • Speaker: Prof. Anil Gupta ( Founder, Honey Bee Network)
  • When Forbes named six grassroots innovators in its list of most powerful rural entrepreneurs in India in 2010, a message got underlined. The Honey Bee Network (HBN), who had nominated these innovators, in the last twenty-six years, had been relentlessly advocating the tremendous potential of these grassroots innovations not only in addressing unmet needs of the society but also generating benefits for the stakeholders involved, not only in India but across the globe.
  • Grassroots innovations are essentially technological solutions generated by the common people to tide over persistent problems. The solutions to such problems are either not available or if available, are unaffordable by a large section of the society in developing countries like India. The possibility of developing successful business models based on these innovations is very high because they originate from people having the first-hand experience of all the issues involved. These innovations are thus need-based, simple, cost-effective and sustainable.
  • With the major contribution from the HBN volunteers, National Innovation Foundation – India (NIF) has pooled a database of over 225,000 technological ideas, innovations and traditional knowledge practices (not all unique, not all distinct) from over 585 districts of the country. It has till date recognized 816 grassroots innovators and school students at the national level in its various competitions.
  • Receiving over 640 queries from 97 countries for grassroots innovations in the last few years, NIF has proved that Indian innovators can match and in some cases outperform anyone in the world when it comes to solving problems creatively, frugally and sustainably. The grassroots to Global (g2G) model that HBN and NIF have been propagating is all set to change the way the world looks at the creativity and innovations at grassroots.

Last few years have seen increased investment interest from domestic as well as foreign Investors. In 2015, more than $ 5 Bn was invested at Angel & VC stage in India.
  • Partnering the right investor aligned with future vision and stage of a startup is very crucial for success. Right investor not only provides the much-needed financing but also relevant mentorship and strategic support to take the startup to the next level.
  • Besides the common financing options such as Equity and Convertibles, some other options like Venture Debt are also existing in India, now. The panel discussion proposes to get perspectives of seasoned VC investors and startup entrepreneurs on various financing options and strategies to raise funds for a startup venture.

Ventures) , Aniruddha Malpani ( Director, Solidarity Advisors)
  • It is late to say now that “This is the era of startups and being an entrepreneur is in trend”, but the ride ahead is not a smooth one, entrepreneurship is tough.
  • The numbers of startups in India are growing at an exponential rate. More than 80 percent of the startups die within the first three years of starting. It is safe to say that every 4 out of 5 startups will fail in their ideation and validation stage.
  • There are various reasons due to which a startup fails to sail through the valley of death;
  • Startup fails to concentrate on one unique value proposition and rather focuses on the various offerings at the same time. – ALL in one Trap
  • Value proposition or the problem statement based on hypothesis and not backed by strong market research.
  • No sustainable business model over a period of time.
  • Wrong Co-founder selection, based on emotion rather than the need of the business.
  • Lack of financial and operational controls
  • No learn and adapt cycle to create a product that customers want.
  • This session will focus on deep diving on the above reasons from different perspectives (people and stage of a startup) and suggest what could be the whistle blowers to not fall in the same trap.

  • This panel will focus on the growing movement of social entrepreneurship, how entrepreneurs are blending innovation and impact, the kind of problems they are solving, how impact investors are doing their bit and what the barriers to creating a fully scalable impact enterprise are.

 Incubators & Academic Institutions

  • Speakers : Poyni Bhatt ( COO, SINE - IIT Bombay's Incubator) , Rakesh Basant ( Prof. of Economics, IIM Ahmedabad) , Ajay Ramasubramaniam ( Director, Zone Startups India) , Paersh Vora (Head-Operations, Ahmedabad University & VentureStudio)
  • Governments across the world have worked with different policy instruments to encourage the establishment and growth of technology-based ventures. Such ventures are seen as important for innovation driven economic activity that results in wealth and employment creation.
  • Higher education institutions (HEIs) are prominent among the public, private and not-for-profit organizations supporting the commercialization of newly developed technologies. Modes and vehicles adopted by HEIs include spin-outs, science parks, intellectual property exploitation (usually through licensing) and different forms of incubation activity.
  • For many academic institutions in the West, incubation activity has emerged out of their technology licensing offices. These institutions already had significant experience of commercialization and technology transfer activities before incubation was taken up as a vehicle for bringing new technologies to the market.
  • With the support of the Government, HEIs in India are broadening their attention from their teaching-research focus to wider engagement in supporting venture creation through incubators.
  • These HEIs, however, have very limited experience of commercializing technologies. Besides, most HEIs in India are not as research intensive as the HEIs in Western nations. Consequently, unlike many of their Western counterparts, HEIs in India are getting into incubation with low quantities of scientific outputs to commercialize and with limited capabilities of evaluating technologies and business development.
  • Given this context a variety of issues become relevant for the links between incubators and academic institutions:
  • Should HEIs be in the business of incubation?
  • If yes, what models of incubation make sense for Indian HEIs for efficacy and sustainability?
  • What does sustainability and efficacy mean in the context of incubators in HEIs? And what should HEIs do about it?
  • Should the measures of efficacy and sustainability differ according to the type of HEI – Technology, Design, Management or a Multi-disciplinary University?
  • Should the incubation models be different for ‘inward looking’ and ‘outward looking’ incubators in HEIs?
  • Can academic institutions develop linkages with incubators even when they do not operate one? This can help them choose the most appropriate model for the technology in question. Is that a good model?
  • How can we create an entrepreneurial eco-system in India like that of Western economies without a single large and truly multi-disciplinary university in place? Do city clusters of HEIs provide an option?

Emerging Technology Trends and Entrepreneurial Opportunities- IoT and Infrastructure

  • Speakers : Ashwin Mahesh  (Founder, Mapunity) , Govind Seshadri ( CTO, Autosense), Dhananjay Gore ( Head - Qualomm Research India) , Rahul Saxena ( CEO, CoBot Systems)
  • Just like India leapfrogged the communication landscape of various developing nations by adopting cellular technologies and in the process transforming millions of lives; there’s ample scope for leveraging a number of other emerging technologies to solve some fundamental developmental challenges.
  • Amongst the plethora of new technology advances springing up at an unbelievably fast pace around the globe, there are a few that truly have the potential to be disruptive breakthroughs and provide unprecedented commercial opportunities in the form of new and/or improved products and services.
  • Next gen entrepreneurs need to be on vigil to spot trends and technologies which would offer global, scalable business opportunities. We do not have structured opportunities for people with a “nose” to sniff out such things.
  • The session would talk about how focused applications of emerging technologies can bring about significant economic impact and specifically learn about a suite of potential ventures that can not only reap entrepreneurial rewards but also bring about much needed mass impact to a host of India’s challenging developmental needs. Come, learn and hear about the emerging and potentially, disruptive technologies and their entrepreneurial applications that will transform life, business and the global economy.

Starting up Right:

  • Speaker : Biplab Ketan Paul (Director, Naireeta Services)
  • We are in an era of unprecedented valuations of VC-Backed startups, and its symbol is the ‘Unicorn’?—?a venture with a valuation of a billion dollars or higher. While pundits are again asking “Are we in a bubble?”, Entrepreneurs are asking a more vital question: “What are the secrets that allow these fresh startups to scale so dramatically and have high valuations?”
  • In all this mania for emerging Unicorns, very few are analytically asking, “How do you become a unicorn?” or “Why are they doing so well?” Over the last couple of decades, the tech industry has learned how to scale technology. A startup can go from a hundred to millions of users without blinking. What’s less clear is how to scale the actual organization structure?—?that has always been a painfully linear and incremental process.
  • This session will deep dive into how likely is it for a startup to achieve a billion-dollar valuation? Is there anything we can learn from the mega hits of the decade – Paytm, Uber, Flipkart, Ola, WhatsApp, etc, and what are the secrets of hitting a billion dollar mark? Also, what is the future ahead – will Unicorns get extinct, again?

Motivating Gujarat (Nodal Institution, University and Trainers)

  • Innovation and entrepreneurship in education provide a mix of creativity, experiential learning, skill building and most importantly, a shift in mindset. Earlier and more widespread the exposure to innovation and entrepreneurship, the more likely students will consider entrepreneurial ideas at some point in the future. This panel discussion aims to motivate the entrepreneurship faculty, trainer, and incubation managers for creating an environment for innovation and Strat-up growth in the state of Gujarat.
  • To promote and create a learning environment that leads the students to experiment Innovation and Entrepreneurship methods and practices.
  • To share experiences of Innovation and Entrepreneurship in education.
  • To present innovative teaching methods for entrepreneurship training
