Here's an eChai with Bilva Desai, Co-Founder, Mokshshil.

What is Mokshshil?

Mokshshil provides personalized & professional, one stop, end to end funeral management services as per the requirements of the deceased family members with authentic rituals performed by well versed priests.

Tell us more about your team ?

Dr. Bilva Desai and Dr. Abhijeet Singh are the co-founders of Mokshshil. They both worked together as professors and are also husband and wife.

How did you come up with the idea ?

In 2012, Dr. Bilva Desai lost her world, she lost her mother. It was a sudden death and her family was in shock. Her precious time went by in searching, sourcing and arranging the funeral, organ donation, after death ceremonies, paper work, Asthi Visarjan and so many things. Suddenly she realized she couldn’t even cry & say her final bye.

Death is the only certain thing in this world.

India is a country with a population of more than 1.2 billon with approximately 13,000 deaths every day.

At that point of time she realized that there are so many like her in my country that might be facing the same problems. At, that moment, she decided that she will do something.

It was her personal experience that made her to think that there should be an organized end to end funeral management services and that led to the ideation of Mokshshil in 2012. This is where journey of Mokshshil begun. Dr Desai had discussed with students as a research faculty and given research projects to management students for feasibility checking and acceptability of this idea. Dr Desai and her husband who is also a faculty of entrepreneurship Abhijeet Singh, directed a survey on 4500 people in Ahmedabad to understand market potential problems faced by Ahmedabad citizens at the time of cremation, which was conducted with the help of students.

Research findings have suggested that 70% of the sample were agreed with the concept of organized funeral management services as they too found the process of funeral indurate at the time of bereavement, 37% of the respondents faced problems in conducting last rites, 29% in arranging prayer venues and about 76% did not know how to conduct the last rites.

Even people said during qualitative research that, they don’t know whom to contact first at such times.

How does it work ?

- During an already very difficult time of personal loss in the family, it becomes very difficult for the near and dear ones to make arrangements for the funeral and other ceremonial procedures as per the rituals.

In the beginning it was very difficult for Mokshshil to sustain as people demoralised the idea, and it had to go through lot of negative reaction because it is basically related to death but it is the fidelity of the members that after the hard work of three years (2013-16), today Mokshshil stands as a proud start up and it has been covered in more than 75 Media, so many blogs and is nationally recognized.

What is the revenue model ?

Mokshshil has started creating benchmarks from a very first day it’s a self-sustainable model. I would like to share an example of our first cremation. One big Marwari Business Family had called and ask for all the arrangements for cremation as well as

Prayer and newspaper advertisement. This was the first time that entire team including founders were there to do the arrangements. List was very big and Family was also very religious. Process was decided and discussed within the Mokshshil team still to make everything smooth entire team was running to double check everything.

And an end to end funeral management service was provided in a personalised and customised way for the client, taking the body from hospital to home and after ritual ceremony to crematorium ground.

Mokshshil can serve by standardise Antim kriya process with a nominal cost of ₹4500 to customised services as per requirements.

What do you want to achieve from this? What is your larger goal or vision ?

Thus, Mokshshil is a one stop solution which provides personalized & professional end to end funeral management services as per the requirements of the deceased family members with authentic rituals performed by well versed priests.

Now Mokshshil is also working on franchisee model to expand its services in different metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore.

Mokshshil envisions to provide its services in a personalised and professional manner to everyone, across the nation.

No matter what circumstances one is in, Mokshshil will provide strength to all during their tough times.

What sort of support and feedback are you looking from the community ?

Losing someone you love or care deeply is very painful. During this painful time of personal loss, it becomes very difficult for the family to take timely decisions and plan funeral. Death is inevitable and you need not fear it, but what you should rather make sure is that your final voyage is peaceful. We just want to urge to our Indian society, it’s not bad when one is thinking or talking about death or after death services. These services are very helpful to everyone irrespective of your cast, community, religion, age or financial status. WE just need support in changing the attitude towards it.

@Bilva - Which has been your toughest client project yet?

Bilva Desai

Thanks for asking this @ Jatin .For us every cremation is difficult bcz, everyday we face a new set of problems ,all families are different situation is different,so all the time we are facing a new challenge .But most difficult cremation was our first operation.on the second day of launching our services we received a call from a marvari Family .They asked for end to end Cremation with lots of requirements. We were very new and extra continuous .so instead of one moksh manager and helper ,entire team of 9 people including myself went there. All the vendors were new so we were not sure about there services.Lots of changes in terms of there requirements and as we were new certain things like type of cremation ,nature of death ,time for final ride ,had not been asked by us.We all were running here there to meet the additional demand .we learned a lot from the first operation as far as process and service are concerned. In future that experience inspired me and team to design step by step process of interaction.Still believe me,Each and every process at every new cremation brings new difficulties
